The history of College Station started when the Houston and Texas Central Railway extended through its area around 1860. It was picked for the site of the A and M College of Texas in 1871. Five years later, it was opened and was also the state's first public secondary learning establishment. The town's population increased steadily, being at only three hundred and fifty in 1884 and then three hundred and ninety-one by 1900. Also that year, College Station became included into the route of the I and GN Railroad. It did not become officially incorporated until 1938 and the population hit two thousand one hundred and eighty-four, two years later. Now visitors can stay in luxury College Station hotels and discover the uniqueness of this "college town".
